What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy, also known as Aqua Therapy, is a water based form of physiotherapy. This is usually conducted in a purpose built facility, where the water is shallow enough for people to be able to stand in and the temperature is constantly regulated to stay warmer than ordinary fitness pools, usually between 30-34°C. The benefits of having therapy in water are numerous. Being able to move in a gravity assisted environment, reduces the load through the body joints, making it easier to move and less painful for anyone who may be suffering from a painful condition or an injury. This allows people to use their body more efficiently and train them to improve strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and ultimately improve function, and even lose weight. Hydrotherapy is usually directed by a qualified therapist who is able to design individualised programmes for people after an extensive assessment of their needs.

Is Hydrotherapy for me?

If you have been struggling to remain active for whatever reason, whether you have experienced a painful condition, recently had an injury or an operation, then yes. Hydrotherapy is also perfect for those who have generally lost strength and condition and fitness. Hydrotherapy is a great way to ease your body back into movement and treatment plans and sessions can be tailored to individual needs and levels of fitness. You will need to discuss your medical history with a qualified Physiotherapist to make ensure there are no specific contraindications and precautions.

Hydrotherapy in Hammersmith

Our sessions in hydrotherapy are carried out as a one to one clinical session with fully qualified specialist musculoskeletal therapists who have had extensive training in hydrotherapy. The therapist guides the sessions in exposing the patient to appropriate exercises and movements for the given specific need or injury. The aim is to maximise neuromuscular recruitment, whilst minimising pain and avoiding unnecessary premature load through the injured structures. Hydrotherapy can often be taken alongside ordinary 'land based' Physiotherapy or exercise sessions.
